Giant sinkhole with a forest found in China
Recommended for Secondary Grades
A team of scientists have discovered a giant sinkhole with a forest at its bottom.
What is a sinkhole?
A sinkhole is a depression in the ground that doesn’t have natural drainage.
Important Details
- The sinkhole is 630 feet deep. A team of speleologists have climbed into the sinkhole and they have discovered that there are three cave entrances in the gap.
- The researchers have found ancient trees that are 131 feet tall and they have their branches stretched toward the sunlight filtering through the sinkhole entrance.
- Also, it is said that this sinkhole could be home to species that are not known to science.
How are sinkholes created?
- The rock below the surface of the land dissolves naturally by acid rain. As time passes, it causes a gap within the Earth. Therefore, sinkholes are created.
- Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China is known for its sinkholes. In this area, the sinkholes have enormous depths and large entrances.
- Many sinkholes act as sources of water. Other common areas for large sinkholes are Mexico and Papua New Guinea.
