Did you know there was a Global Teacher Prize that appreciates the best teachers in the world. This award also has a prize money amount of US$1 million.

What would you do if you won US$1 million (₹ 7.4 crore)?

Ranjitsinh Disale is a school teacher in Paritewadi village in Maharashtra. Yesterday, he won this year’s Global Teacher Prize, which comes with a prize of US$1 million.

But in an amazing act of selflessness, Ranjitsinh has already given away half of it! He has shared it with nine of his fellow finalists for the prize.

The Global Teacher Prize is a yearly award presented by the Varkey Foundation. It is presented to a teacher who has made an outstanding (amazing) contribution to teaching. It aims to recognize the importance of teachers.

Ranjitsinh Disale won the award this year for promoting girls’ education. He also provides online science lessons for pupils in 83 countries. He was chosen from 12,000 candidates.

Ranjitsinh said teachers “always believe in giving and sharing“. And he has shown it through his action.

A special Covid Hero prize was also awarded to Jamie Frost, a UK teacher who ran a free maths tuition website.
