Goals for climate change are ‘within reach’, says new UN study

Recommended for Secondary Grades

Over the years, many goals for climate change have been set by governments and the UN.

A new analysis suggests the goals of the UN (United Nations) Paris climate agreement are getting “within reach”.

The Paris Agreement is an agreement signed by almost all the countries of the world. The goals for climate change is to keep the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C. It also aims to pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C (celsius). All of this would reduce the risks and impacts of climate change.

In the new analysis, a research organisation called the Climate Action Tracker looked at new climate promises from China and other nations.

If these countries stick to their commitments, it would mean the rise in world temperatures could be held to 2.1°C by the end of this century. This is almost what the Paris Agreement’s goal is.

The Climate Action Tracker group had earlier estimated that global temperatures would rise by 3.5°C by the end of this century. But now, they are more hopeful.

How are the goals for climate change now within reach?

In September, China’s President Xi Jinping said that China will reach net zero carbon emissions by 2060. This could reduce warming by 0.2 to 0.3°C by the end of the century.

Other countries like Japan and South Korea have also both pledged to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Another reason to be hopeful is the election of Joe Biden as the new US president. Climate change is an important part of his global plans.

However, there are several countries who have still not set goals and continue to use coal, which contributes to global warming.
