Today is Gandhi Jayanti. It marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. This day is one of the three officially-declared national holidays in India.

Key facts!

  • Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) was born on 2 October 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat.
  • Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most important leaders that India and the world have ever seen.
  • Using the idea of non-violence, he led the successful campaign for India’s independence from British rule.
  • This, in turn, also inspired other movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
  • His great work resulted in the use of the honorific (honourable name) “Mahātmā” to be applied to him.
  • In the Sanskrit language, it means “great-souled”.
  • It was first used in 1914 in South Africa and is now used throughout the world.
  • On this day, we celebrate his life by offering prayers and wishes in his honour.
  • The President and Prime Minister of India also pay respect at Raj Ghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi.
  • The United Nations also celebrates this day as the International Day of Non-Violence in honour of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and achievements.
