The first vending machine
We read about the vending machine that gives out hot pizzas during the weekend. Vending machines are common today. But how did they get invented?
The first vending machine was believed to have been invented by Heron (or Hero) of Alexandria, about 2000 years ago.
Who was Heron of Alexandria?
Heron was a Greek-Egyptian inventor, known by the nickname ‘Mechanicos’. He was one of the finest mathematicians and inventors that the world has ever known. Along with the great Archimedes, he began to explore the practical uses of mathematics.
The first vending machine
The vending machine that Heron invented was a device to dispense holy water. To use it, a worshipper had to insert a coin through a slot. The coin dropped onto a tray that was connected to a lever. The weight of the coin opened a valve that let the water of a certain quantity flow out.
The coin slid off the tray, and, with the aid of weight, the lever snapped back into place. Thereafter, it is ready for the next worshipper seeking divine favour.
Other inventions
Apart from the first vending machine, Hero invented many other inventions like the steam engine too. He created these mechanical machines for temples, homes, and the theatre. They totally amazed the ancient people who saw these “magical machines” in action.
