Hong Kong residents protest against extradition bill

Hong Kong residents protest against extradition billOn 9th June, almost a million citizens marched in Hong Kong to protest against the newly proposed extradition* bill.

There was another huge protest on 12th June against the second debate on the bill.

The protest on 12th June turned violent and the debate is on hold.

What is the extradition bill?

It will allow suspects accused of crimes such as murder to be taken to mainland China to face trial.
 	Hong Kong would have to hand over those who have been accused of crimes in Taiwan and Macau too.

Why are the citizens protesting?

They are worried that China will use the changed law to target a certain type of people.
 	It will badly affect Hong Kong’s already crumbling* autonomy*.

The Hong Kong government has assured that it would make the final decisions on extraditions, not China.

Human Rights organisations and other countries have voiced concerns about this potential change in the law.

Hong Kong and China

Hong Kong is a special administrative region in China.
 	It is a part of China but is considered semi-autonomous. It has its own laws and courts with more freedom for residents.
 	It was a British colony for 156 years and was returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

*Extradition: To make someone return for trial to another country or state where they have been accused of doing something illegal.

*Autonomy: A self-governing country or region (autonomous - self-ruling)

*Crumbling: To become weaker in strength or influence.
