Hovering robot eliminates excavation!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

The first hovering robot in the world has been made that can collect rare minerals from the ocean floor. The robot is able to do so without having to excavate the ocean floor.

With the help of a smart robot miner, technology has demonstrated that ocean mining can be done in a way that doesn’t hurt the environment.

This was done in response to the growing need for important battery minerals.

What are polymetallic nodules?

Polymetallic nodules are rocks that contain more than one type of metal.

The Eureka 1 is the world’s first undersea selective mining robot.

Key facts!

  • Polymetallic nodules typically contain lithium, nickel, and cobalt.
  • Eureka 1 showed that it is possible to dig up these nodules in an environment-friendly manner.
  • Scientists who worked on building the Eureka 1 say that Eureka 1 never touches the seafloor.
  • The robot floats in the air above the seafloor.
  • It is also not tied to a ship.
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) directs Eureka 1 with mining.
  • Eureka 1 has been tested to a depth of 25 feet.
  • At 25 feet it successfully separated nodules from rocks and brought them back to the surface.
  • Experts say that technology could make the supply of materials for making batteries more stable.
  • Industry experts also think this is a big step toward utilising climate-conscious mining methods.
  • The mining method also avoids hostile places like war zones or seafloor with an unstable state.
  • It is hoped that Eureka 1 will be ready for mass production by the year 2026.

The makers of Eureka 1 share with us a short clip demonstrating sustainable seafloor mining.
