Huge sandstorm hits ancient city in China

Huge sandstorm hits ancient city in ChinaDo you know what a sandstorm is?

A sandstorm happens in a hot desert in which strong winds blow blown sand into the air. A hot desert is a large area of land covered with sand. Such places are very hot, have very little water and very few plants. Sandstorms are often scary-looking events and they can cover whole cities.

Recently, a huge (very big) sandstorm hit a city called Dunhuang in China. The storm swallowed up big buildings and covered everything in sand and dust.

Videos show the storm, looking like a sand wall, covering tall buildings. All the sand made it very difficult for people and cars to see the road. Police had to stop cars from moving about. You can also see the video below.
Sandstorms
They are also called ‘haboobs’ in the US. This word comes from the Arabic word ‘hab’ which means ‘wind'. Sandstorms can happen really quickly, within minutes. If you get caught in a sandstorm, you will be covered in sand from head to toe and it can even enter your mouth and nose. So, you have to protect yourself.
