On Sunday, Hurricane Ida hit the southern US state of Louisiana. The storm has knocked out power in the entire city of New Orleans. New Orleans is a famous city renowned for its music, food, language and its annual festivals, the most famous being Mardi Gras.

Ida made landfall as a dangerous Category 4 hurricane with winds of 150 miles per hour. It got downgraded down later to a Category 2 storm,

The storm has hit Louisiana 16 years after Hurricane Katrina.

What is hurricane Katrina?

Hurricane Katrina was a large Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that caused over 1,800 deaths and $125 billion in damage in late August 2005. It particularly affected the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas.

More than one million people in Louisiana and the neighbouring state, Mississippi, are without power. Hurricane Ida has also affected water supply lines. Moreover, roads were also blocked due to fallen trees. The heavy rain is also causing flooding.

The Louisiana governor, John Bel Edwards, said that Hurricane Ida is one of the strongest storms to ever hit Louisiana. He has urged residents to remain indoors and to be patient.

Other states

The hurricane has also affected other states in the southern US and rescue teams are working to help people.
