Illegal Mining in Aravalli – Disappearing Mountain Ranges

On February 4, 2019, Supreme Court bench led by Justice Arun Mishra observed that the Rajasthan government remained irresponsible on illegal mining in Aravalli mountain ranges.

In October 2019, Supreme Court bench comprising justices Arun Mishra and Deepak Gupta had ordered stopping of illegal mining in Aravalli area, after 31 hills or hillocks were missing.  
 	The court recounted through ground-truthing (data collection), after 3 months and found that State did not stop illegal mining. Court asked the chief secretary of the state to appear before it for an explanation.
 	Rajasthan government excused the continuance of illegal mining by citing the reason of just-concluded assembly polls and the upcoming Lok Sabha polls this year.
 	This is how the court responded, “What are you saying? As elections are there, so illegal mining will go on till then? What is this? You do not want to do this because this suits you. The entire machinery is rotten”.
 	The entire flora and fauna of the Aravalli range has been affected due to the illegal and indiscriminate mining.
 	Aravali is the oldest range of fold mountains in India. Mining of copper and other metals in the Aravalli range dates back to at least the 5th century BC.
