Increasing heatwave: Weather update

Heatwaves have increased all over the countries. According to the IMD (India Meteorological Department), the temperatures can rise by 2 to 3 degrees after two days.

What is heatwave?

Heatwave is a long period of excessive hot weather.

Rainfall, Dust storm and thunderstorms are also predicted over Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh during the next two days.

Increasing heatwave conditions

Heatwave conditions continue to prevail in Northwest Rajasthan and Haryana. The maximum temperatures are recorded to be 42 degrees to 44 degrees in most parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. Power outages in many parts of India is also leading to blackouts.

Heatwaves are also a consequence of global warming and it could lead India and it’s neighbours where climate will become a threat to human health.

Measures to control heatwaves

  • Amid the increasing heatwaves, the government of Haryana has changed the school timings from 4th May.  The schools will now open at 7 AM and will end by afternoon. This decision came after the teachers wrote letters to the chief minister and the education minister, in order to change the school timing as the children are falling ill due to heatstroke.
  • The Punjab government has declared summer vacation from the 14th of May due to the heatwave.
  • Odisha government has declared the closure of schools and colleges.
  • The West Bengal government has also declared summer vacation from 2nd May till 15th June.
  • Many districts in Rajasthan have changed school timings. In Jaipur, the school timing for classes 1st to 8th has changed from 7:30 AM to 11 AM, while the timings for classes 9th to 12th haven’t changed.
