India news update – 28 November 2020

District Development Council election in Jammu and Kashmir

For the first time after the removal of Article 370 and becoming a union territory, Jammu and Kashmir is going to the polls.

The election will be held in eight phases from today till 19 December 2020. The vote counting will take place on 22 December.

For the elections, many parties have formed an alliance called the Gupkar alliance. The parties are the National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Communist Party of India (M), Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference, Peoples Movement and Awami National Conference.

COVID-19 update

Cases in India have crossed over 6.35 million.

Prime Minister Modi is on a 3-day tour of 3 cities to review COVID-19 vaccine developments. He is currently in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to review pharmaceutical company Zydus Cadila’s vaccine development.

After this, he will visit the Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune, Maharashtra. The last stop will be Bharat BioTech in Hyderabad.

Maharashtra has extended its COVID-19 lockdown till 31 December.

Farmers’ protest

Farmers’ protest against the centre’s farm bills continue. They are gathering at Nirankari Samagam Ground in Burari, Delhi to protest. Many are also camped at the Delhi-Haryana border.

Economy

The Indian economy contracted (shrunk) by 7.5% in the July-September period of this fiscal amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Sports

The sixth Premier Badminton League (PBL) has been postponed to next year. It was supposed to take place in the last week of December in Delhi, Mumbai and Pune. The PBL is one of the highest prize money badminton tournaments in the world.
