India Post launches first-ever free digital locker serviceIsn't it inconvenient when a postman arrives with a package but you are not at home? The postman will have to come again another day.

In order to minimise this problem, the Department of Posts is launching a free digital locker service in Kolkata today. This is the first-ever initiative of its kind in India.

What is a digital locker service?

Whenever a person receives a parcel or letter, instead of delivering it, the post office will put it in a locker at the post office itself and inform the recipient of the locker number.
 	Then, the recipient can come and collect the package any time of the day or night. They will get an OTP (one-time pin number) on their mobiles and use that to open the locker and collect their package.

Where are they launching this facility?

To start with, the facility will be available in two post offices in Kolkata - the Nabadiganta IT Post Office and the New Town Post Office.
 	These two neighbourhoods have many IT companies and most workers are not at home during the day.
 	For now, the service extends only to registered post or speed post.

The postal department hopes to extend this service to private couriers in the future. Digital lockers are already quite popular in Europe as well as South East Asia.
