A torpedo is a long, thin bomb that travels underwater in order to destroy the ship at which it is aimed.

The Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) was tested from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island (or Wheeler Island) off the coast of Odisha.

It has been made in India, by various laboratories of India's DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation).

What do we know about SMART?

In SMART, the system uses a missile to take a torpedo far beyond its usual range at three times the speed of sound. The SMART system extends the torpedo's range to more than 643 km.

Other nations, including Russia, the US and Japan, also have missiles or rockets that can carry a lightweight torpedo. However, India's range is believed to be the longest yet.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO scientists on the successful conduct of the test.

The flight testing of SMART follows the successful test-firing on Saturday of another India-developed nuclear-capable hypersonic missile ‘Shaurya’. Shaurya has a strike range of around 1,000 km from the test range.
