India to build the world’s largest facial recognition systemThe Indian government is planning to build the world’s largest facial recognition system.

The aim of this plan is to control the crime rate in the country.

How will it work?

A centralized database (a list of everybody's details) will be accessible to the police across all states of the country.
 	It would match images from India's network of CCTV cameras against a database which will have criminal records.
 	States like Andhra Pradesh and Punjab are already using this technology.

Action Plan

The database will contain criminal mugshots (photos), passport photos as well as photos collected from agencies, newspapers, magazines and more.
 	An alert will be generated whenever there is a match from the database.
 	The security forces will also have mobile phones to capture photos in public places and cross-check with the database if required.

The National Crime Records Bureau has invited applications from companies to build this system.

The new facial recognition platform can play an important role in identifying criminals, missing persons and bodies. It will also help police forces 'detect crime patterns' and crime prevention.

However, there are also concerns about citizens' privacy rights and also potential misuse of the technology.
