Recently, Harry Potter fans "potterheads" were delighted to read that Indian herpetologists (people who study snakes) have named a new snake after Salazar Slytherin, a character from the Harry Potter series.

In the series, Salazar Slytherin was a great wizard and one of the founders of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He could speak to snakes and the house of Slytherin is named for him.

What do we know about this new snake?

It has been named Trimeresurus Salazar. It was discovered in 2019 in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.
 	The snake is a type of venomous (poisonous) pit viper and it is green in colour.
 	Pit vipers are called so because they have a ‘pit’ in between their eyes and nostrils. This is a special organ that senses body heat from other animals and helps them hunt as well as run from danger.

Arunachal Pradesh lies in the Himalayan region and is rich in wildlife. It is home to many types of animals and plants.
