The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Balasore in Odisha will get India’s first thunderstorm research testbed.

Thunderstorm testbeds are set up to study lightning and thunderstorms. Scientists use this information to learn how to protect people and property from lightning strikes.

The thunderstorm research testbed in Odisha will be a collaboration between the Ministry of Earth Sciences, IMD, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Every year, between April and June, the states of Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand are affected by lightning strikes which also kill people.

IMD Director-General Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra also said that a first-of-its-kind monsoon testbed is also being planned near Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. This is in addition to the thunderstorm research testbed.
