India’s first underwater tunnel in Maharashtra!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

India’s first underwater tunnel will be in Mumbai. The tunnel will be built with a tunnel boring machine and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).

The New Austrian tunnelling method is a modern way to design and build tunnels. It uses high-tech monitoring to find the best way to reinforce the walls based on the type of rock that is found as tunnelling goes on.

Key facts!

  • The 21-km tunnel is for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor.
  • Seven km of the tunnel will be under the sea.
  • Between the underground station at Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shilphata in the Maharashtra district of Thane, the tunnel will be built.
  • The 7-km undersea tunnel at Thane Creek will be the first one built in the country.
  • The tunnel will have only one tube, but it will be big enough for two tracks.
  • The section will have 39 equipment rooms built in 37 places next to the tunnel location.
  • This underwater tunnel will be between 25 and 65 metres deep from the ground.
  • The deepest point of the construction is 114 metres below the Parsik hill near Shilphata.
