Indonesia’s Hindu Heritage: Nusantara

Indonesia has passed a law to relocate its capital to Nusantara. Earlier, Jakarta was the capital city of Indonesia. Nusantara has its roots in the Hindu heritage of Indonesia.

Hindus in Indonesia

Indonesian history is influenced by Hinduism when Indian traders and priests travelled to Southeast Asian nations during the 1st century. The last Hindu kingdom to rule Indonesia was Majapahit. This kingdom remained in power until the 16th century. Islamic forces conquered Indonesia in the 16th century.

The national emblem of Indonesia is Garuda.

What is the importance of Garuda?

Garuda is hindi word for Eagle. In Hindu mythology, it is known as the mount of Lord Vishnu.

You will be thrilled to learn that Indonesia is not only the home to the world’s largest Muslim population, but it is home to 4 million Hindus. Several aspects of Indonesian culture reflects the history of Hinduism.

Indonesian Hinduism is a hybrid of Hinduism and Buddhism.

Importance of Nusantara

The new Indonesian capital, Nusantara will cover at least 216 square miles and it is located in East Kalimantan province. Indonesian President Joko Widodo said that they want to make Nusantara a global hub and a centre of innovation.

Nyoman Nuarta is known for his Garuda statue is given the task of designing the new Presidential complexes in Nusantara.
