Inspirational Paralympian – Mariyappan Thangavelu
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Hey there, my curious friend! Get ready to be amazed because today we’re going to dive into the exciting world of the Paralympic Games and learn about an incredible Paralympian from India named Mariyappan Thangavelu.
Mariyappan Thangavelu is a super talented high jumper who represents India in the Paralympic Games. Back in 2016, when the Summer Paralympics took place in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, he participated in the Men’s high jump T-42 category and guess what? He soared to new heights and won a shiny gold medal! Woohoo!
Now, this was a big deal because Mariyappan became India’s first Paralympian gold medalist since 2004. Can you imagine the joy and pride he must have felt? It’s like reaching for the stars and actually grabbing one!
Soaring Inspiration
- But wait, there’s more to his list of achievements. Mariyappan also won a bronze medal in the Men’s high jump T-63 event at the World Para Athletics Championships. That’s another impressive feat, don’t you think? He’s proven time and time again that he’s a force to be reckoned with in the world of high jumping.
- You know what’s cool? Before he became a Paralympic superstar, Mariyappan loved playing volleyball when he was in school. His instructor, who saw his potential, encouraged him to give high jumping a try. So, at the age of 14, he took a leap of faith and started his journey as a high jumper. Little did he know that this decision would lead him to great heights in the world of sports!
- Now, let’s talk about the awards and honors that Mariyappan has received for his incredible athletic prowess. In 2017, he was bestowed with the prestigious Padma Shri and Arjuna Award. These are both significant recognitions of his outstanding achievements.
- But the accolades didn’t stop there! In 2020, the government of India honored Mariyappan with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Wow, that’s a mouthful! But what exactly is this award? Well, it’s India’s highest sporting honor, given out every year by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It’s like a gold mine of recognition for athletes who have shown exceptional talent and dedication in their respective sports. Isn’t that awesome?
- Now, here’s a twist to the story. Mariyappan was supposed to carry the Indian flag during the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games today. But oh no, a mischievous character named COVID-19 decided to play tricks, and Mariyappan had to go into quarantine because he came in contact with someone who tested positive for the virus. Silly COVID-19, always causing trouble!
- So, while Mariyappan may not be carrying the flag at the moment, his spirit and determination remain unwavering. We can’t wait to see him in action once he’s out of quarantine, jumping over obstacles and inspiring us all with his incredible abilities.
