Inspirational Paralympian – Nishad Kumar

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Hey there, my curious friend! Let me tell you about a super amazing Paralympian named Nishad Kumar. He’s a high jumper from India who did something incredible at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021.

Nishad jumped so high that he set a brand new Asian record! Can you guess how high he jumped? It was a whopping 2.06 meters! That’s like reaching up to the ceiling of a really tall building. And you know what? He won a shiny silver medal for his fantastic jump in the Men’s High Jump T47 category.

But wait, there’s more! Nishad was not alone in achieving this amazing height. He shared his silver medal with another talented high jumper named Dallas Wise from the United States. Both of them jumped the same height, 2.06 meters. It’s like they were competing in a jumping race, and they tied for the silver medal. How cool is that?

Record-Breaking Paralympian: Nishad Kumar’s Soaring Triumph!

  • Now, let’s talk a little bit about Nishad’s journey. He comes from a place called Himachal Pradesh in India. When he was just eight years old, he had a very unfortunate accident that caused him to lose his right hand. It was a sad thing to happen, but Nishad and his family didn’t let it bring them down. They worked really hard to overcome this challenge.
  • In 2009, Nishad decided to become an athlete. He wanted to show the world that nothing can stop him from reaching great heights, both literally and figuratively. He trained hard and started competing in different events. In 2019, he made his first entry in the World Para Athletics Championship. Guess what? He won a shiny bronze medal in the Men’s High Jump T47 category. That was a big achievement for him, and it helped him qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics Olympics.
  • But wait, there’s even more to Nishad’s success story! In 2021, he won a shiny gold medal at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai. He’s been jumping and winning medals all over the world, making India proud.
  • Now, let’s take a look at the overall medal tally at the Tokyo Paralympics. China is in first place, winning a whopping 136 medals. That’s like having a treasure chest full of shiny gold, silver, and bronze medals! Great Britain is in second place, and Russia is in third. Our beloved India is at the 33rd position, with a total of 10 medals. Wow, that’s really impressive!
  • Oh, and guess what? The Paralympics got even more exciting because para-badminton made its debut in Tokyo. Imagine playing badminton with super cool rules designed for para-athletes. It must have been a blast!
  • In conclusion, Nishad Kumar is a true inspiration. He showed us that with determination and hard work, we can overcome any challenge. Losing his hand didn’t stop him from becoming an amazing athlete and winning medals for his country. So, remember, my friend, no matter what obstacles come your way, keep jumping high towards your dreams, just like Nishad Kumar!
