International Day of Sign Languages – 23 September

International Day of Sign Languages – 23 September23 September is celebrated across the world every year as the International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL).

We celebrate this day to raise awareness of the importance and conservation of sign language.
 	The celebration also focuses on ensuring the rights of Deaf people around the world.

The day commemorates the establishment of World Federation of Deaf (WFD) on 23 September 1951.
 	On 19 December 2017, the UN General Assembly declared 23 September as International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL).
 	The theme of IDSL 2019 is “Sign Language Rights for All!”

Sign Language

Sign languages are the languages used by deaf people to communicate through various hand signs.
 	They are fully-developed natural languages.

According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are around 72 million deaf people worldwide.
 	There are around 300 different sign languages in use.
 	Deaf people also use an international sign language, especially on international platforms.
