International Volunteer Day – 5 DecemberWho is a volunteer?

A person who works for an organisation without being paid. There are many volunteers around us who spend their time and energy to serve others without expecting anything in return.

What is International Volunteer Day (IVD) all about?

The day is celebrated to recognise and appreciate volunteers and their work. It is celebrated every year on 5 December around the world.
 	This day was first observed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985.
 	Many non-governmental organisations (NGO), volunteer organisations, etc also celebrate this day.
 	Every year on this day, United Nations Volunteers (UNV) holds the UNV Online Volunteering Award.
 	People vote for the person they think is the best volunteer. The person with the highest votes will be announced on the next International Day of Happiness (20 March).

How is it celebrated?

People around the world will celebrate this day with parades, community cleaning & blood donation drives, conferences, exhibitions and fundraising events.

The theme for 2019 IVD is "Volunteer for an inclusive future".
