Margaret Alva, the nominee of the opposition, was defeated by Jagdeep Dhankhar for the position of Vice President of India by a margin of 346 votes.  His opponent, Margaret Alva, received 182 votes in the poll.

As per political analysts, Mr Dhankhar’s selection is on the basis of his political career, and his education. Dhankhar was born and brought up in a family of farmers in rural Rajasthan.

  • Thereafter he decided to pursue a law degree. After getting a degree in law, he began his legal career working in Rajasthan High Court and then Supreme Court.
  • Jagdeep began his career as a politician and served in important leadership roles for a number of departments.
  • During the campaigns for Vice Presidential Elections 2022, he was called “Kishan Putra,” which means “Farmer’s Son.”
  • In the years to come, he will have to play a key role in the Upper House’s efforts to keep the delicate balance between the government and the opposition.
