Jakarta experiences severe floods

Jakarta experiences severe floodsJakarta, the capital of Indonesia has been receiving heavy rainfall since the last three days. This has resulted in one of the worst floods experienced by the city.

More than 30,000 people have been evacuated or transferred to safe temporary shelters.
 	News and videos show cars submerged under the water. People were seen walking through the brown floodwaters in many parts of the city.
 	The state electricity has switched off power to avoid injuries and electrocution.
 	The domestic Halim Airport has been shut due to the floods and flights are being redirected to the bigger Soekarno airport. Train and bus routes have also been affected because of the floods.
 	People have lost their homes and property which have been washed by the floods. Also, more than 21 people have lost their lives.
 	The recorded rainfall on New Year’s Eve was 14.5 inches. This is three times more than the average monsoon rainfall in Jakarta and the hilly areas in West Java.

These are the worst floods since 2013. The government plans to build a dam and sluice (sliding gate) on its two major rivers Ciliwung and Cisadane to avoid flooding in the future.
