Cherry blossom season

Japan is famous for its cherry blossom (“sakura” in Japanese) trees. When the trees bloom, it signals the beginning of Spring.

This year, the cherry blossom season has started early. The 2021 season in Japan’s city of Kyoto peaked on 26 March. In fact, it is believed to be the earliest date since historical records started 1,200 years ago.

The blossoms last only for a few days, but everyone celebrates them. The cherry blossom season is like a festival where family and friends gather to enjoy the beautiful flowers. Cherry blossoms have great importance in Japanese culture and you can see them everywhere – in Japanese art, films and Japanese-made products.

Climate change

While the flowers are beautiful, scientists say that the early blooming is likely due to climate change. Climate change is making Earth warmer, causing Spring to come earlier. This has been happening over the last few decades.
