Joe Biden to run against Donald Trump in the 2020 U.S. presidential election

Former US Vice-President Joe Biden has won the election. He will now run for the President of the US against current President Donald Trump of the Republican Party.

The presidential elections are scheduled to be held on 3 November 2020.
 	Mr. Biden has been endorsed (shown support) by his former competitors in the Democratic Party's election including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
 	Former US President Barack Obama, under whom Mr. Biden served as Vice-President, has also declared his support for Mr. Biden.

The next task now for Mr. Biden will be to select a candidate to be his Vice-President and they will campaign together for the 2020 elections.

How is the US president elected?

The US, unlike India, has a presidential system. The US does not have a Prime Minister and the President runs the country.
 	The US President is elected in an indirect election by the members of the Electoral College. The Electoral college has 538 members from 50 states who are elected by US citizens.
 	In order to win the presidential election, a candidate must win at least 270 out of 538 votes.
 	Additionally, unlike India, which has many political parties, the US primarily has two main parties. These are - the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Their candidates are the main candidates in presidential elections. While other small parties do exist, they have little influence.

US presidential elections are held once every four years and US Presidents can be elected for a maximum of 2 terms (8 years).
