Kerala to appoint women drivers in government officesOn 21st August, the Kerala state cabinet announced the decision to appoint women drivers in all government departments and public sector undertakings.

The aim of this move is to “ensure gender equality in all walks of society.”

The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms will amend the recruitment rules. It may take about two or three months to make the change.
 	Once this is done, the Kerala Public Service Commission will put out the public notifications inviting women to apply for the posts.
 	This decision will give women more employment opportunities and work towards women empowerment.

51.4% of Kerala’s population is women.

In Kerala, women drive private buses, taxis, autorickshaws and ambulances. However, the state-owned Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has only one woman driver among the 11,000-odd drivers.

The Kerala government had also recently formed the first women battalion in Kerala's police force with over 550 members.
