Kind fisherman befriends lonely dolphin ‘Fungie’ during lockdown

Recommended for Foundational Grades

As we are all under lockdown, you must be missing your friends and family. It is not only humans who are sad to be alone – animals feel it too!

Fungie is a famous bottle-nose dolphin, who lives off the coast of Dingle, Ireland. He has been living there alone for over 37 years but gets many tourists and visitors.

What are bottle-nose dolphins?

They are the most common species of dolphin, that live in oceans with mild temperatures around the world. They are very popular for their playfulness and intelligence.

  • Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, Fungie has not been getting any visitors.
  • Local fisherman Jimmy Flannery kept noticing that Fungie was acting strangely and realised that he must be feeling lonely. Fungie enjoys meeting people and usually spends his day playing and swimming with tourists and visitors.
  • So, now, Jimmy has taken permission to go out to sea twice a day to greet Fungie.
  • Fungie seems happier now and greets Jimmy with a lot of energy.

Jimmy says he will visit Fungie till the lockdown gets over and other visitors can return.

Generally, dolphins live in groups. However, Fungie seems to be different. Last year, he officially became the ‘oldest dolphin that lives alone‘.
