Lakshadweep is a group of 36 islands in the Lakshadweep sea. They were formerly known as the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Aminidivi Islands.
 	It has a total surface area of just 32 sq km!

Lakshadweep means "one hundred thousand islands" in Sanskrit and Malayalam.
 	The capital of Lakshadweep is Kavaratti.
 	According to the 2011 Indian census, Lakshadweep has a population of 64,473 people.
 	The main occupation of the people is fishing and coconut cultivation.

Even if the islands are small, Lakshadweep is a treasure trove of nature!

Lakshadweep has over 600 species of marine fishes, 78 species of corals and 52 species of crabs.
 	Apart from that, there are also many types of lobsters, birds seaweed and many more.
 	Lakshadweep is one of the four coral reef regions in India.

Many tourists also visit Lakshadweep throughout the year. They come to enjoy the beautiful scenery and have fun with water sports activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing, water skiing.
