The landfills in Ghazipur burn causing air pollution

In Delhi, a large landfill caught fire which is increasing air pollution.

What are landfills?

Landfills are the disposals of waste material by burying the waste in pits.

Ghazipur landfill burn

The Ghazipur landfill is a towering mountain of waste material in Eastern Delhi. It exceeded its capacity in 2002, yet, thousands of waste material is still dumped every day.

The decomposing waste produces methane and it may have caused the fire due to excessive heat. The fire smouldered for 30 hours, continuing until Wednesday. The people near the burning landfill are infected by poisonous fumes emitting out of the garbage.

There are hundreds of waste dumps in India where many cities do not have a proper disposal system for waste.
