Leading by example -Tipu SultanLast week we read about  Rani Laxmi Bai, who led India's first freedom movement.

This week, let us read about another great leader who fought against colonial rule - Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore. He was also known as Tipu Sahab or the Tiger of Mysore.

He was born as Sultan Fateh Ali Sahab Tipu on 20 November 1750 in Devanahalli (Bangalore).
 	He became the Sultan of Mysore in 1782.
 	During his rule, Tipu Sultan promoted many technological and administrative innovations.
 	One of his famous innovation was the introduction of new types of coins and its denominations.

He also introduced a lunisolar calendar, in which the date indicates both the Moon phase and the time of the solar year.
 	Tipu Sultan helped in establishing Mysore as a major economic power, by introducing a land revenue system.
 	He built several architectural monuments like Daria Daulat Bagh and Gumbaz.

He also had a great love for horticulture and gardening.
 	He fought and won several wars against the Marathas and the British.

Tipu Sultan was killed on 4 May 1799 while defending his fort of Srirangapatna (Karnataka) against the British East India Company.
