Lieutenant General Manoj Pande – Chief of Army Staff!

Lieutenant General Manoj Pande has been named the 29th Chief of the Army Staff. He is the first from Combat Support Arms to lead the 1.3 million-strong Army. He will take over on April 30 when Gen Manoj Naravane is set to step down.

Indian Service Chiefs – NDA Alumni!

Thus, the Indian service chiefs will all come from the National Defense Academy’s 61st batch when the new Army chief, Lieutenant General (Lt. Gen.) Manoj C Pande takes over. He will be the 29th person to hold the position of Chief of the Army Staff (COS).  Navy Chief Admiral Hari Kumar and Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari are also from NDA (National Defense Academy).

Officials say that having the three top commanders be course-mates will help them work even better together, and it will be very important when the three services work together to build integrated theatre commands.

What is Operation Parakram?

Following the terrorist attack on Parliament on December 13th, 2001, a full-scale deployment since the 1971 India-Pakistan conflict was launched called ‘Operation Parakram.’

A leader of several missions!

Lt. Gen. Pande is an alumnus of the UK’s Staff College. For a long period, he was a Chief Engineer for the United Nations. Operation Parakram, which took place in the Pallanwala region of Jammu and Kashmir, was led by the General Officer in command of the 117 Engineer Regiment.

As part of the Strike Corps, he commanded an Engineer Regiment and an Engineer Brigade. In addition, he has commanded an infantry brigade, a mountain division, and a corps in the North East.
