Life science enthusiast cultivates mini-forests in jars!

Recommended for Abu Dhabi

Kiran Kannan an Indian in Abu Dhabi is passionate about the study of living things. He cultivates mini-forests inside glass jars. These closed terrariums or mini-forests can survive for years using only sunlight.

What is a terranium?

A terrarium is usually a glass container that can be sealed and used for cultivating plants.

Kiran, 45 years old, is from Kerala. He is a passionate hiker and nature lover. Kannan is also a writer in the field of life sciences.

Kiran treats the mini-forests like they are his little kids. He also knows everything about every terrarium and the worlds that live in them.

Important Details

  • There are more than 150 terrariums in the collection.

  • It’s basically a small indoor garden that’s made in a pot or a sealed glass jar and filled with different small plants.
  • When he wakes up in the morning, the first thing he does is open the glass jars and take a deep breath of the smell of the raw earth inside.
  • Kannan thinks that making small versions of the biosphere is not only a way to connect with nature but also a way to plan for the future of the planet.
  • He wants his terrariums to be shown in well-known buildings in Abu Dhabi.
