Long Road to Recovery from Cyclone Idai

Long Road to Recovery from Cyclone IdaiA tropical cyclone called Idai had struck the coastline of Mozambique on 14th March. It caused devastation and heavy loss of life in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Rescue efforts:

Government and aid agencies have been flying-in help.
 	Workers are working to restore electricity and water and are trying to prevent diseases from spreading. The government is setting up cholera treatment centers in affected areas.
 	Helicopters and boats have been used to rescue people who were left for days on rooftops and trees.

Sebastian Rhodes Stampa, of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (United Nations OCHA), said that as the water recedes the roads have begun to open up. This is helping rescuers reach more people to help them.

However, the most difficult parts to reach are the interiors of Mozambique. Some survivors have been digging through the fallen structures with their hands to search for their loved ones. The death toll for Cyclone Idai has gone up to 750 people across southern Africa.

Cyclone Idai is considered one of the worst tropical cyclones to hit Africa and the Southern Hemisphere as a whole.
