Lucy Bronze, Virgil van Dijk win UEFA Player of the Year awards

Lucy Bronze, Virgil van Dijk win UEFA Player of the Year awardsOn Thursday, Olympique Lyon's Lucy Bronze was named the UEFA Women's Player of the Year, while Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk won the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award.

The award ceremony was held in Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, where the Champions League draw for the upcoming season was also conducted.
 	Mr Van Dijik also won the Defender of the Season award for the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League season.
 	While Ms Bronze could not attend the ceremony, she expressed her gratitude via video.

Lucy Bronze

Ms Bronze is the first English player to be awarded the honour.
 	She beat her fellow Olympique Lyon team-mates Ada Hegerberg and Amandine Henry to the award.
 	Barcelona's Lieke Martens won the award in 2018.
 	Ms Bronze was part of the England team that reached the semi-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup in July 2019. She also won the Silver Ball as the tournament's second-best player.

Virgil Van Dijk

He is the first defender to win this prestigious award.
 	Mr Van Dijk beat Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo for the prize.
 	Real Madrid's Luka Modric won this award in 2018.
 	Mr Van Dijik was Man of the Match when Liverpool won the Champions League in June 2019.

UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Player of the Year is a football award given by UEFA to the best male and female footballer who played for a European football club during the previous season.
