Mahavir Jayanti!
Recommended for April
The 4th of April is Mahavir Jayanti. The day is marked by the Jain community around the world in honour of the final Jain spiritual teacher – Lord Mahavir.
Lord Mahavir lived and taught non-violence, and he told people to love and respect all living things.
Significance of Mahavir Jayanti!
Mahavir Jayanti is one of the most important days for Jains. On this day, people who are part of the Jain religion remember the last spiritual teacher of the religion.
Lord Mahavir came up with Jainism, a new religion. There are two things that Jains don’t eat: non-vegetarian foods and violence. Mahavir Jayanti is a good time to think about these things.
People go on a procession with the idol of Lord Mahavira, which is called the Rath Yatra. Visit temples, read religious rhymes, pray for a healthy and prosperous life from God, and do a lot of good deeds for the good of the whole world, as well.
History of Mahavir Jayanti!
Lord Mahavir is believed to be the first person to start Jainism. He was born in Bihar on the 13th day of the bright half of the moon. It was in the month of Chaitra at that time. He was the 24th and last person to be a Tirthankar (teaching god who preaches dharma).
Lord Mahavir was born into a royal family, but he didn’t like being royalty or having a lot of money. A lot of the time, he looked for inner peace and spirituality.
Principles of Lord Mahavir!
Mahavir says that to live a righteous life, one needs to believe and practice the following rules:
- All living things are not hurt by nonviolence (Ahimsa).
- Having the honesty (Satya) to say what is true
- When you don’t steal, you don’t have things that don’t belong to you. (Asteya)
- Chastity (Brahmacharya) tells people not to do things that make them happy.
- Not getting attached to material things is called Aparigraha.
