Mattur – The village where everyone speaks in SanskritMattur is a small village in Karnataka. What is unique about it is its language - Sanskrit.

Everyone in the village, from adults to children understand and speak Sanskrit.
 	Years ago, the villagers in Mattur spoke in Kannada. Tamil was also popular because of the large number of workers from the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.
 	It all changed when an organisation, Samskrita Bharati, conducted a 10-day Sanskrit workshop in Mattur in 1981.

A priest who was attending this workshop declared Mattur as the first Sanskrit village of the country.
 	Since then, everyone has learning and speaking Sanskrit, irrespective of social and economic class.

Sanskrit belongs to the Indo-Aryan group of languages and is the root of many Indian languages.

It was widely used in ancient India as the main language of scholars.
 	Sanskrit was sometimes referred to as ‘devabhasha’ – which means the language of gods.

If you visit this village, they will greet you saying “Katham Aasthi” which means ‘how are you’ in Sanskrit. Would you reply in Sanskrit?
