May records the second highest rainfall in 121 years

May records the second highest rainfall in 121 yearsMany parts of the country are currently receiving rainfall due to the Southwest Monsoon. The monsoon started on 3 June in Kerala.

However, before this, the month of May received the second-highest rainfall in 121 years. This is per a report by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The reason for this record rainfall is believed to be due to Cyclones Tauktea and Yaas. There were also some western disturbances. Western disturbances are cyclonic storms that start in the Mediterranean Sea and eventually hit north India.

Rainfall over India for the month of May 2021 recorded 107.9 millimetres of rain. This is 74% more than its Long Period Average (LPA) of 62 mm. LPA is the average rainfall between the years 1951 and 2000.

This year, May was also relatively cooler than most other years. It recorded the fourth-lowest average maximum temperature in May since 1901. The country also did not see any major heat waves.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is a government agency under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. It observes and predicts the weather, like temperatures and rainfall. IMD has hundreds of observation stations all over India.

The current head of the IMD is Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra. It is also one of the six regional centres of the World Meteorological Organization.
