Mecca welcomes almost one million people this year to make their once-in-a-lifetime dream come true. After nearly two years of COVID restrictions, the holy city prepares to host the hajj pilgrimage.

- The hajj is one of the most important parts of Islam, and all Muslims who are healthy and able must do it at least once in their lives.
- This year, Mecca expects that about 8,50,000 pilgrims will come from outside the country.
- Banners that wish the faithful visitors a warm welcome hang all over the city.
- On July 3, the government of Saudi Arabia said that at least 650,000 pilgrims from other countries had come to the country as of that date.
- State officials say that more armed guards have been sent to protect the historic city where the Prophet Mohammed was born.
- Authorities will make sure that the holy place is thoroughly cleaned so that pilgrims who have been vaccinated can go to the hajj.
- The holiest place in Islam, the Grand Mosque, will be cleaned and disinfected ten times a day.
- In Saudi Arabia, masks are no longer required in most enclosed spaces, but they will have to be worn inside the Grand Mosque starting this year.
- Those who are coming from a different country will have to show proof of a negative PCR test.
