Meet the Padma Vibhushans of 2019Padma Vibhushan is the second highest civilian award of the Republic of India after Bharat Ratna.The award is given for “exceptional and distinguished service“, irrespective of race, occupation, position or gender, only exception being employees of public sector.

Ever since its institution in 1954, 307 individuals have been conferred the Padma Vibhushan Awards

Teejan Bai – Born in Chhattisgarh, she is a performing artist of Pandavani (stories of pandavas from Mahabharata). Married at the age of 12, she was ousted by her community for practicing Pandavani singing, which was not an accepted art form for women. She continued her art and got her big break, when she performed for Mrs. Indira Gandhi and thereafter became an international performer. She has also been a receiver of Padma Shri (1988) and Padma Bhushan (2003).
 	Ismail Omar Guelleh (Foreigner) – President of Djibouti, served in the police, before joining politics in Djibouti. He has been their President since 1999. He has been awarded Padma Vibhushan for his role in the safe evacuation of Indian citizens from Yemen.
 	Anil Manibhai Naik – Group Executive Chairperson of Larsen and Toubro Limited (L&T), one of the biggest engineering conglomerates of India. He comes from a humble background, an engineer himself, he served L&T for 50 years. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2009. He is setting up an educational institution in Kharel and gives large part of his wealth in charity.
 	Balwant Moreshwar Purandare – He is a writer and is associated with theatre. His writings are mostly based on Shivaji’s lifeand events surrounding Maratha Empire. He started writing at a very young age and has written famous books like Thingya, Raja Shiva-Chatrapati, Kesari and very popular play Jaanata Raja.
