Miners trapped in ‘Rat Hole Mines’ in MeghalayaSince December 13, 2018, around 15 mine workers have been trapped in ‘Rat Hole Mines‘ and rescue operations have been on.

In Meghalaya, there are small privately owned coal mines, which have very small sized hole and do not receive any light, therefore called Rat Hole Mines.
 	Coal is the main source of Energy in India. North East India has coal and mineral reserves. However these type of mines have been banned by Government due to safety reasons.
 	Some owners continue to operate them, as they get good price and they depend on mines for their livelihood. The workers are paid good wages to do the risky work.
 	15 Mine Workers got trapped in one of the mines due to flooding of the mine with water.
 	The mine holes are so small that the rescue agencies and Indian Navy, who are working on rescuing of the miners were not able to reach the bottom of the mines.
 	Pumping of the water from the mine and neighbouring mines is on, so that agencies can find the workers stuck in the mine.
