More flowers in your garden can help save bumblebee populationWe read earlier about how bumblebees are declining in numbers and have been declared an endangered species.

Why is there such a sharp decline in their numbers?

A few potential reasons could be:

Loss of floral resources
 	Competition with other insect species
 	Transfer of parasites from honey bees to bumblebees
 	A mismatch between the phenology of plant species and the phenology of bumblebee species. Phenology is how plants and animals function in their environments in different seasons.

Helping the bumblebee population

High-quality plant resources are important for keeping and increasing the bee population.
 	Bumblebees don't necessarily have natural preferences but will decide based on the quantity or quality of the nectar or pollen available, and how easily they can access it.
 	The shape, symmetry and the colour of flowers also play an important role in attracting specific species of bumblebees.
