NASA and the movies

You must have watched many movies where the stories happen in space, like Star Wars. Now, can you imagine a movie that was shot in space?

Famous Hollywood actor Tom Cruise is planning with NASA to make a movie on the International Space Station (ISS). Apart from astronauts, the ISS has also received some tourists over the years. But Tom Cruise could be its more famous visitor yet!

What is the International Space Station (ISS)?

The ISS is a space laboratory that orbits about 408 km above Earth. It was built as a partnership among dozens of countries. But the United States and Russia are its main operators.

Have other films been shot onboard the ISS till now?

  • Previously, a 2002 documentary (a film on real events or people) has been shot here (which Cruise narrated).
  • In 2012, businessman and space tourist Richard Garriott, also filmed a short science fiction movie onboard the ISS called Apogee of Fear.
  • However, Cruise could be the first actor to travel to space and this film will be the first full-length film to be shot onboard the ISS.

As of now, it is not clear yet how and when Cruise will travel to space. He may travel on a SpaceX flight.

SpaceX is taking NASA astronauts to the ISS on 27 May 2020, the first time in 10 years from American soil.
