Space telescope to study the Big bang

What is the Big Bang theory?

This theory says that the universe began as just a single point. Then, it expanded and stretched to grow as large as it is right now (and it could still be stretching).

NASA is planning to build a new space telescope to study the Big Bang. The telescope is called SPHEREx. This stands for “Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer”.

SPHEREx telescope

NASA plans to launch the space telescope between 2024 and 2025. Expected to be the size of a small car, SPHEREx will run for two years. During this time, it will map the entire sky four times. This will create a giant database of galaxies, stars and nebula, helping create a 3D map of the sky.

SPHEREx will search for evidence of something that NASA says “might have happened less than a billionth of a billionth of a second after the Big Bang”.
