NASA’s technology helps save the world’s largest fish

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Have you ever read about whale sharks? They are the world’s largest fish.

Whale sharks can grow up to 20 metres in length and weigh more than 19,000 kg. Compare that to an Indian elephant, which weighs about 4000 kg.

Whale sharks are endangered (less in number) today. Studies show that the sharks’ populations worldwide have fallen by more than 50% over the past 75 years. Although they are protected in many countries, the world’s largest fish are still killed for their fins.

Efforts to save them

In order to save the world’s largest fish, people around the world are taking photos of them. They are then uploaded to a website called The Wildbook for Whale Sharks. This website helps identify the sharks by the unique lines and spots on their skins.

Then NASA technology, (which was originally used to map the stars), helps map their locations and track their movements.
