National Legal Services Day!
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
We celebrate National Legal Services Day every year on 9 November.
The Supreme Court started this day in 1995 aiming to extend help and support to the weaker sections of society.
Important Details
- Weaker sections of society can include disabled, children, Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, women, natural calamities victims etc.
- They may not always able to afford legal services (hire lawyers, etc).
- On this day, many government and non-government organisations organise legal literacy camps to make people aware of their legal rights.
- This day also aims to make sure that free legal services are available to those who need it.
- It is also important for students and children to be aware of the constitutional rights and laws relating to them. For example, laws relating to child labour.
National Legal Services Day highlights the message that all citizens should have access to justice irrespective of their background.
