Millipede species named after Taylor Swift

A new millipede species is named after Taylor Swift, the popular American singer-songwriter.  That’s an unusual achievement, isn’t it?

New millipede species

A new millipede species have been identified recently. It is called Nannaria swiftae (N.swiftae). These species have twisted claws. These species are identified by Dr Derek Hennen and his team.

Dr Derek Hennen tweeted that he’s a fan of Taylor Swift and he has just shown his appreciation by naming the new millipede species after her.

Discovery of the new millipede

The new millipede was discovered during a research project to find and analyze the species of millipede genus Nannaria. The research was done across 13 states in the Appalachian mountain region. A total of  1,835 millipede specimens have been found.

The N swiftae millipede species has reddish-orange spots on its body. They have a chestnut brown body and bumps on their legs. They belong to a group called cherry millipedes.

Millipedes release a chemical in defence against predators that smell like cherries or almonds. It is harmful to their predators and harmless to their humans.

The interesting fact is that the millipede species was found only in Tennessee. This is the place where Taylor Swift began her career as a country singer. Now, naming the species after the singer makes sense.

Why are millipedes important?

Millipedes may appear creepy but they are important for our ecosystem. They consume decomposing plant matter and release the nutrients that enrich the soil. They are efficient diggers and spend their lives underground.
