New monkey species discovered but it is ‘already facing extinction’

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Scientists have discovered a new monkey species in the deep forests of Myanmar.

Sadly, even though we have just discovered it, only about 260 of it are left in the wild. It faces great dangers from habitat (forest) loss and hunting.

It has been named the Popa langur. Most of them live in a wildlife sanctuary park on the slopes of the extinct volcano Mount Popa.

Langurs are a group of leaf-eating monkeys that are found across south-east Asia.

The Popa langur has a long tail, spectacle-like rings around its eyes and greyish-coloured fur.

Scientists had long believed that there might be a new monkey species in Myanmar but could not find it. Early explorers had collected samples too about 100 years ago. Scientists used these samples to identify the new species.

New reptiles and amphibians have been discovered in Myanmar over the last decade. But the discovery of a new monkey is rare.

Scientists are now hoping that by identifying and naming the new monkey species, they can work towards saving it.
