New report ranks India among world’s least free democracies

New report ranks India among world’s least free democraciesA global survey has ranked India as one of the lowest-ranked "free" countries in the world.

The report is called Freedom in the World 2020.

What does the report say?

The report ranks India at the 83rd position, along with Timor-Leste and Senegal.
 	This is near the bottom of the countries categorised as “free”, with only Tunisia ranked lower.
 	India’s score fell by four points to 71 this year, the worst decline among the world’s 25 largest democracies.
 	The report highlights the scrapping of Article 370, the Citizenship Amendment Act, and frequent internet shutdowns in India over the past year as some reasons for the low ranking.
 	As per the report, internet freedom has also declined for the fourth year in a row in India.
 	Finland, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and Luxembourg are the top five countries in the free category.

The report also said that freedom and democracy are in decline across the globe, especially in the US and more. 64 countries' freedom rankings deteriorated in 2019.

However, people across the world continue to fight for freedom as seen in Hong Kong, Iran, etc.

Who conducts this survey?

Freedom House, a US-based organisation conducts this survey every year.
 	It conducts research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom, and human rights.
 	Each year, it assigns 195 nations and territories to one of three categories: free, partly free and not free. The percentage of free countries, 42.6%, still exceeds those deemed partly free or not free—32.3% and 25.1% respectively.
